FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
DO I REALLY GET MY OWN COACH?
Yes! You’ll work with one person specifically for your entire stay. Delivering intimate, tailored experiences to our guests is in everything we do, especially our 1-on-1 coaching program. You’ll be paired with a coach that matches your needs who will be with you on every surf lesson, coaching just you specifically, helping you improve every day you stay with us.
WHAT DO WE DO BESIDES SURF?
You’ll join our other guests in activities that assist in active recovery. Yoga, ice baths, breathwork exercises, hosted classes, and so much more! Check out the rest of our website to see how your trip can be curated. These non-surf activities are a great time for you to reflect, recuperate, and better understand yourself in a safe and encouraging environment.
Our non-surfing itinerary is a major part of why the Surf Synergy experience is so unique. See what our guests have to say about it here.
DO I NEED TO PAY FOR MEALS?
No! Food is a huge part of our guest experience, and it’s included in every stay – three square meals every day. Breakfast is buffet style, lunch is family style, and dinner is hosted. All in the casita at the bottom of the hill. Our cuisine is an incredibly healthy blend of international styles, with distinctly Costa Rican flair. Your meals are prepared with ingredients either sourced locally or grown directly on our property. No matter your dietary needs, we’re happy to accommodate.
Grass-fed beef, locally caught fish, organically grown produce, mountain spring water, and mangoes and starfruits from our very own trees(!) are part of every week’s menu.
WHAT'S THE WEATHER LIKE?
Green season begins at the end of April and continues until mid-December. It is a beautiful time to be in Costa Rica as the lush tropical vegetation is in full force. During the green season, the rain generally, with exception, does not begin until late afternoon or evening, leaving a full day to explore in dry comfort.
WHAT SHOULD I PACK?
You’ll be in three modes at Surf Synergy. Active, Recovering, and Surfing. That means sneakers, hiking sandals or hiking shoes for adventures, flip flops or sandals for getting around the retreat and to/from surfing. Yoga clothes, beach/swimwear, and casual wear for warm weather are a great idea. Make sure to pack something to wear while eating at our casita, and maybe bring a light raincoat and light jacket just in case. Bring your own favorite water bottle to stay hydrated, or feel free to purchase one from our shop upon your arrival.
HOW DO I GET THERE?
It is literally so easy. Once you’ve arranged your flights, all you need to do is send your itinerary to your personal coordinator over WhatsApp or email. We’ll coordinate a driver to pick up you and your companions, and your driver will be outside the airport upon your arrival. At SJO, that means walk outside the airport to the right, look for your name on the placard your driver is holding. They will happily assist you with your bags, and accept requests to stop and pick up any last minute items.
DAYLIGHT & TIME ZONE
Sunrise is near 5:30am, and sunset is near 5:30pm year-round. It usually starts getting light around 5:15am. Whether you’re an early riser or hanging out late afternoon, you’ll love our views during the twilight hours.
COMMUNICATING WITH US
We accept wire transfers and credit cards as payment for your booking. Once you’re on the property, we can take cash as well. While we don’t have an ATM on the property, we take both USD and Colónes, Costa Rica’s official currency.
WHAT'S THE CANCELLATION POLICY?
If something prevents you from making your original reservation date, we can reschedule your stay up to 24 hours before your arrival time. If you need to cancel, you’ll need to do so 30 days before your arrival date.
The official currency of Costa Rica is the Colón. The exchange rate is typically between 530-560 colones to one (1) US dollar. While dollars are generally accepted in all developed areas, more rural locations may not, and you will always receive your change back in colones. We recommend you bring $20 notes or smaller, as higher denominations are often not accepted.
Finally, we recommend you don’t change money first thing at the airport in San José. Exchange rates are better locally, and we are happy to help you coordinate currency exchange for better rates than at SJO.
VISA & PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS
All guests to Costa Rica must provide evidence of a return trip or travel onward outside of Costa Rica at the customs office at which they arrive. Therefore, book your return flight before you land, and have it ready on your phone to present to the immigration officers at customs. If your’e traveling from the US & Canada or most of the EU, you should be fine with just a passport and proof of return or onward travel. See more here.
WATER & ELECTRIC
We source our water from a freshwater spring nearby in Puntarenas Province, and have water stations in every building on our property. Bring your favorite water bottle and stay hydrated!
Costa Rica uses 120V, 60Hz current, and the same for wall outlets. This is the same as the US, so guests from the US will not need adaptors for their devices. If you’re from a country that uses a different kind of wall outlet, you may need to bring an adaptor to charge your phone, laptop, or other device.
HEALTH, SAFETY, & COVID-19
All temporary immigration measures restricting entry to Costa Rica based on COVID-19 have been repealed. All commercial establishments, activities, and events can operate at 100% capacity. Use of masks isn’t mandatory on our premises nor most establishments in Costa Rica. Enhanced safety protocols remain in place however, such as handwashing between activities and temperature monitoring.
